The TL494 chip contains all the functions required to build a pulse width modulation (PWM) control circuit on a single chip. Designed primarily for power control, this device offers the flexibility to customize power control circuits for a specific application. The TL494 device includes two error amplifiers, an adjustable on-chip oscillator, a dead-time control (DTC) comparator, a pulse control flip-flop, a 5% precision 5-V regulator and output control circuitry . The error amplifiers show a common-mode voltage range of -0.3 V to VCC - 2 V. The dead-time control comparator has a fixed offset that provides about 5% dead time. The built-in oscillator can be bypassed by connecting RT to the reference output and providing a sawtooth input to CT, or it can control common-mode circuits in synchronous multi-rail power supplies. Uncommitted output transistors provide output with a common emitter or with an emitter secondary. The TL494 chip provides either a push-pull output or a single-ended output, which can be selected using the output control function. The architecture of this circuit excludes the possibility of any of the outputs pulsing twice during a reciprocal operation. The TL494 chip features operation from 0°C to 70°C.
