Operation of a Schmitt trigger in the CLOCK input circuit provides pulse shaping that allows unlimited rise and fall times of the clock input pulse. The counters are advanced by one count on a positive transition of the clock signal if the CLOCK INHIBIT signal is low. The counter advance through the clock line is paused when the CLOCK INHIBIT signal is high. A high RESET signal resets the counter to zero. Using the Johnson counter configuration allows fast operation, 2-input decode gating and decoded outputs without pulses. Anti-block gating is provided, thus ensuring correct count order. Decoded outputs are typically low and reach high values only in the corresponding decoded time slot. Each decoded output remains high for one full clock cycle. The CARRY-OUT signal completes a cycle every 10 clock input cycles in the CD4017B and is used to clock the next device in a multi-device count chain.
